Interprète lors d'une mission radio

📻 Live on the radio: on air with a translator-interpreter 🌍

On October 23, 2025, I had the pleasure of being invited to France Bleu ICI Nord, on the program Bienvenue chez vous – Le dossier du jour, to discuss a fascinating topic: Why do French people find it difficult to learn several languages?

As a translator and interpreter, I shared my experience and gave some practical advice on how to improve your language skills, based on my daily professional life.

🌍 An education system marked by fear of making mistakes

Asa conference interpreter and translator, I often observe that the main obstacle to language learning is not skill, but fear of making mistakes.

"The French often underestimate themselves. It's a question of perfectionism. They have a fear of failure, particularly when it comes to learning foreign languages."

Our education system emphasizes perfection rather than communication.
However, speaking a language is above all about daring to express yourself.
This is exactly what I experience every day in my work as a translator and interpreter, where you have to find the right word, but also know how to adapt and improvise.

🗣️ Practice above all else: a key to translation and interpreting

During the program, I emphasized that daily practice is essential, whether for a learner or a professional interpreter.

"Learning must be immersive. When you watch a movie in its original language, you help your ear get used to the sounds and structures of the language."

Languages are part of everyday life.
Watching films in their original language, listening to podcasts, reading in another language, or doing amateur translation are all ways to improve.
This is also how professional translators maintain their language skills.

👶 Start early... but it's never too late to learn a language

In the program, we also discussed the importance of starting to learn languages at a young age.
But I wanted to reiterate an important message:

Regardless of age or social status, one can always learn. It is never too late to begin.

Even as an adult, it is possible to make progress with motivation and regular practice.
I often see this with my clients: professionals who open themselves up to another language also broaden their worldview.

💡 Practical tips for improving your foreign language skills

Here are some simple tips I shared during the show, based on my experience as a translator and interpreter:

  • Listen to podcasts or watch videos in their original language every day;
  • Stick vocabulary post-it notes around your house to visualize the words.
  • Play or chat online in the language you are learning;
  • Spend 20 minutes a day actively practicing: reading, listening, translating, repeating.

These habits are the same as those that nurture the skills of a professional interpreter: regularity, curiosity, and constant contact with languages.

💬 An enriching experience and recognition of the interpreting profession

Participating in this program on France Bleu ICI Nord was a particularly rewarding experience.
It was a wonderful recognition of my profession as a translator and interpreter, and an opportunity to share my vision of successful multilingual communication.

Being invited by a major regional radio station such as France Bleu ICI Nord shows how important language issues remain today, in a world where translation andinterpretation help build bridges between cultures.
